Fury and Usyk Return to Negotiating Table for Heavyweight Championship Fight

The boxing world was disappointed when negotiations for the undisputed heavyweight championship fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk fell through. This, coupled with the inability to make the undisputed welterweight championship fight between Errol Spence and Terence Crawford happen, led to boxing’s already less than stellar reputation taking a hit. However, negotiations between Fury and Usyk appear to be heating up once again.

Current Situation

Bob Arum, Fury’s promoter, confirmed that both parties are returning to the negotiating table. Skills Challenge, the company that puts on boxing events in Saudi Arabia, is involved in the negotiations. Arum has talked with a representative from the company and had some very interesting talks. Fury and Usyk have both stated that they want the fight, so there is hope that things will work themselves out this time around.

While some may be skeptical about this latest development, a Fury-Usyk matchup is intriguing. Fury is a giant of a man who can hit and move as well as anyone in the division. Usyk, although smaller than Fury, is said to be the same height as George Foreman in the ring. He is also a master boxer who knows how to hit himself. Fury would likely be the favorite walking in, should the fight be made, but it’s hard to imagine him being much of one. In other words, it’s not too difficult to see a Fury-Usyk match going either way.

With several major fights falling through in the past, the boxing public has become skeptical about negotiations. However, the recent success of Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia making a superfight happen gives hope for future negotiations. It would be nice for the heavyweight division to have an undisputed world champion once again.
