Mercedes hopeful after topping second free practice session in Montreal

Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell led the way in the second free practice session in Montreal. The session took place after the first free practice had to be abandoned due to CCTV problems. The team’s form around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has raised hopes of a proper challenge again this weekend. This is after the performance boost they delivered at the Spanish GP.

Mercedes drivers feel timing of low-fuel runs flattered performance

Both Hamilton and Russell felt that the timing of their low-fuel runs late on in the second free practice session flattered their performance compared to the main opposition. Hamilton said that the car didn’t feel bad, but they definitely have work to do. He added that the ride control and balance through the corner need improvements. Russell explained that although the team had topped the times, it remained unclear just where the genuine pace of Mercedes stacked up against the opposition. He also stated that they still lag behind in terms of qualifying pace compared to Ferrari and Aston Martin.

Mercedes encouraged by step made with new upgrade package

Mercedes now has its third race with its new upgrade package. Hamilton said that he continued to feel encouraged by the step made. He added that the car is massively better than last year. The rear end is not necessarily better, but overall the car is a step forward.
