Boston Celtics to Keep Joe Mazzulla as Head Coach for Next Season

Boston Celtics’ team president Brad Stevens has confirmed that Joe Mazzulla will remain the head coach for the next season. Stevens praised Mazzulla’s leadership skills and stated that he is always trying to learn and improve. Mazzulla led the Celtics to a 57-25 record and secured the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference in his first season on the bench. However, the team’s season ended with a Game 7 loss to the Miami Heat in the East finals.

Assistant Coaches Leaving

Three assistant coaches of the Boston Celtics, Ben Sullivan, Aaron Miles, and Mike Mose, are reportedly leaving to rejoin Ime Udoka, who was named head coach of the Houston Rockets last month. Mazzulla took over as head coach when Udoka was suspended for the season for multiple violations of team rules, including reportedly having an intimate relationship with a female staff member.

Plans for the Roster

While the Celtics will monitor the league landscape for potential additions that could help, Stevens likes the existing core of the team and does not plan for any significant changes to the roster. However, due to NBA rules, Stevens declined to speak specifically on the decisions needed to be made this offseason involving Jaylen Brown, who is eligible to sign a five-year supermax extension on July 1, and restricted free agent Grant Williams.

Maintaining Team Infrastructure

Stevens believes that the team has the potential to be a championship team and wants to do as little as possible to disrupt the infrastructure. He stated that they love their foundation and core, and that is their priority. Stevens also plans to add at least one assistant coach with extensive NBA experience to the bench this summer, filling the spot vacated when Damon Stoudamire left to become Georgia Tech’s coach in March.
