Mercedes’ New Upgrades in Monaco

Mercedes has introduced a significant package of bodywork and suspension changes that was supposed to have run for the first time at the cancelled Imola event last weekend. Despite the obvious complications inherent in learning about a new package on a tricky street track, the team opted to keep them on the car and put some miles on them. Lewis Hamilton finished FP2 in sixth place while his teammate George Russell was 12th. The team worked hard to get the new parts to the track.

The Team’s Performance

Mercedes’ team principal, Toto Wolff, stated that it is difficult to judge the upgrades in Monaco. However, the car did not exhibit any negative behaviour. He also noted that after a disappointing FP1 session, Red Bull made progress in the second session, and reckons Max Verstappen showed he is a step ahead of the rest of the field. Despite being only sixth on headline times, Hamilton insisted that it had been a positive first day with the new package. Russell also had a positive outlook on the improvement to the car.

Wolff stressed that he was proud of the effort made by the team to get the new parts to the track. The whole bodywork is different, front suspension, and the floor is different. The team has a new baseline and has to work from here. He also acknowledged that Monaco is a difficult track to judge the upgrades, but the team is going in the right direction.

Hamilton had a positive experience with the new package and expressed his gratitude to the team for their hard work in building, designing, and developing the car. Although the car wasn’t as close as he had hoped at the end of the session, he felt the improvements and is optimistic about squeezing more juice out of the car. He also stated that there is an area of improvement that is clear to him, and the team will discuss it in the debrief to figure out how they can improve the car within what they have.

Russell was also upbeat about the improvement to the car and stated that there are positive signs to take from the session. The team made a lot of changes, things they would have done on the previous iteration of the car as well. They will work overnight to see what more they can do to try and get more out of the tyre. He also stated that the base performance of the car is good and that they need to try and flip their overachievement on a Sunday and underachievement on a Saturday.

Mercedes debuted a significant package of bodywork and suspension changes in Monaco, which showed some positive signs in the second session. Although it is difficult to judge the upgrades in Monaco, the team is going in the right direction. Hamilton and Russell had a positive outlook on the improvement to the car and are optimistic about its performance in the upcoming races.
