Patrick Kane, the 34-year-old forward for the New York Rangers, has undergone a hip resurfacing procedure, according to his agent Pat Brisson. Brisson told reporters that the surgery was successful and Kane is expected to make a full recovery. The surgery will keep Kane out of action for four to six months. Despite the setback, Kane still “wants to play for a long time”.
Kane’s Contract and Impending Free Agency
Kane played the final 19 games of an eight-year, $84 million deal with the New York Rangers last season. It is not yet clear how the surgery will impact his impending free agency, but Brisson has said that they will consider options if Kane does not have a contract on July 1. However, Brisson emphasized that the priority is Kane’s successful recovery from the surgery.
Kane’s Career Achievements
Kane is a nine-time All-Star and three-time Stanley Cup winner, all with the Chicago Blackhawks, who selected him No. 1 overall in the 2007 draft. He has also won several individual awards in his career, including the Calder, Smythe, Hart, Pearson, and Ross trophies. He won the Hart as MVP of the 2015-16 season. In his 16-year career, Kane has amassed 1,237 points (451 goals, 786 assists).
Hip Resurfacing vs. Hip Replacement
Hip resurfacing is an alternative to hip replacement, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In hip resurfacing, the femoral head is not removed, but is instead trimmed and capped with a smooth metal covering. This procedure is often recommended for younger, more active patients who have hip arthritis or other hip conditions. It allows them to retain more of their natural bone, which may be beneficial for future hip surgeries or replacements.
