Racist Behavior Towards Athletes on the Rise Despite Software Designed to Protect Them, Says Sloane Stephens

Sloane Stephens, the 30th ranked tennis player in the world, spoke out about the increasing amount of racist behavior directed towards athletes. Despite software designed to block racist comments on social media, Stephens said that the problem has only gotten worse throughout her entire career as a Black athlete. The French Open, where Stephens recently won her first-round match, is one of the tournaments that provides software protection for players. However, Stephens explained that the software is not effective as people can simply use different words or symbols to bypass it.

Unfortunately, Stephens is not alone in her experience of racism in sports. Professional athletes across all sports have regularly been confronted with racist comments and behavior. Real Madrid soccer player Vinicius Junior is one of the recent high-profile cases. Vinicius became the target of racist chants at Valencia’s Mestalla stadium last week, and it sparked a worldwide wave of support and national debate in Spain when he spoke out against Spain and LaLiga’s lack of action against racism. Tottenham Hotspur, an English soccer club, has also been working with the Metropolitan Police to investigate an allegation of racial abuse towards their South Korean striker Son Heung-Min.

Stephens said that the racism athletes face has reached a worrying level. She pointed out that the FBI is investigating cases where people have made racist comments online, which highlights the severity of the problem. However, Stephens also expressed her concern that people online have the freedom to say and do whatever they want behind fake pages, which makes it challenging to hold them accountable.

Although Stephens did not go into specific details about her experiences, she emphasized that the problem is prevalent and needs to be addressed. Racism in sports is an issue that has been going on for years, and despite the efforts to combat it, the problem continues to persist. Racism not only affects the athletes’ mental health and well-being but also has a significant impact on their performance.

The reality of racism in sports is a concerning issue that needs to be addressed. Despite software designed to protect athletes from racist comments, the problem remains prevalent. It’s time for everyone in sports to take action and create a safe and inclusive environment for all athletes, regardless of their race or ethnicity.
