Ravens and Lamar Jackson Agree on Largest Deal in Team History

Quarterback Lamar Jackson has agreed to sign a five-year contract extension worth $260 million with the Baltimore Ravens, according to sources. The deal includes $185 million in guaranteed money, making Jackson the highest-paid player in the NFL at $52 million per year. Jackson had been seeking $230 million in guaranteed money, similar to what Deshaun Watson and Kyler Murray received, but ultimately settled for a slightly lower amount.

The Negotiations

Negotiations between Jackson and the Ravens have been ongoing for 27 months and proved challenging at times. Jackson represented himself during the process and only recently reached an agreement, just 10 days after Jalen Hurts signed a five-year contract extension worth $255 million, including $180 million guaranteed. The agreement also came just before the NFL draft, when the Ravens could have potentially selected a quarterback in the first round.

Despite some uncertainty in the negotiations and a nonexclusive franchise tag placed on Jackson last month, which allowed him to negotiate with other teams, no other teams expressed interest in him. Jackson had even requested a trade last month, but the Ravens ultimately agreed to the largest deal in team history to keep him in Baltimore.

Jackson’s Accomplishments

Jackson’s record of 45-16 (.738) is the fourth-best of any starting quarterback to debut in the Super Bowl era. He led the Ravens to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons, turning the franchise around after three straight seasons of missing the playoffs. In 2019, he became the second unanimous selection as NFL MVP, leading the league in touchdown passes with 36 and breaking the record for most rushing yards by a quarterback with 1,206. However, recent injuries and uneven play have raised some concerns about his performance going forward.

Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta expressed his excitement about the deal, saying, “It was a long, long process…but family is never easy. We’re thrilled we were able to get this done.” Jackson also expressed his happiness to remain with the Ravens, saying in a video, “For the next five years, it’s a lot of ‘flock’ going on.”
