Record Number of Trades Made During NFL Draft Weekend

The 2022 NFL Draft saw a record-breaking 43 trades over the course of three days. This shattered the previous record of 40 trades set during the 2019 draft. The first trade of the draft was made by the Houston Texans, who selected Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud with the No. 2 pick. They then made a move to the No. 3 spot to select Alabama linebacker Will Anderson Jr. The Texans traded their No. 12 pick, the No. 33 pick in this year’s draft, and a first- and third-rounder in the 2024 draft to the Arizona Cardinals to make the move.

Titans Move Up to No. 33 Pick

The Tennessee Titans made a move to the No. 33 pick of the draft by trading two picks in this year’s draft (Nos. 41 and 72) and a third-round pick in the 2024 draft to the Arizona Cardinals. The Titans then selected Kentucky quarterback Will Levis. The Cardinals were one of the most active teams during the draft and had the potential for at least 11 picks in the 2024 draft.

Texans and Bills Part of Record-Breaking Trade

The Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills were part of the 41st trade of the draft, which broke the previous record. They moved up in the sixth round to select Iowa State wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson at No. 205.

Veteran Players Traded During the Draft

Even NFL veterans were not immune to the flurry of trades during the draft. The Detroit Lions traded running back D’Andre Swift to the Philadelphia Eagles, while the New Orleans Saints traded tight end Adam Trautman to the Denver Broncos as part of a trade to get one of the Broncos’ sixth-round picks.

The trades continued throughout Friday and Saturday, with the Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns making the final swap. The Ravens moved to pick No. 229 to select USC tackle Andrew Vorhees in exchange for a sixth-round pick next year. Overall, the 2022 NFL Draft set a new record for trades, demonstrating the willingness of teams to make moves in pursuit of their desired players.
