Washington Capitals Hire Spencer Carbery as New Head Coach

The Washington Capitals have announced their new head coach, Spencer Carbery, after parting ways with veteran coach Peter Laviolette this offseason. Carbery, who most recently served as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs, will receive a four-year deal with the Capitals.

Carbery’s Coaching Career

Carbery, 41, is considered one of the best young coaches in the game and has had success at every level at which he has coached. He began his coaching career with the Capitals organization, working for its ECHL and AHL affiliates, before moving on to other teams. In eight years as a head coach at the pro level, Carbery’s teams have finished below .500 just once. His best work yet was engineering a 17-game point streak in 2018-19 that took the AHL Hershey Bears from last place to the playoffs. He has been a quick riser after winning ECHL Coach of the Year (2014) and AHL Coach of the Year (2021).

Capitals’ Expectations

The Capitals’ senior vice president and general manager, Brian MacLellan, is optimistic about Carbery’s leadership, communication skills, ability to develop players, and familiarity with the organization. MacLellan has begun engineering a retool to get younger, but owner Ted Leonsis has promised captain Alex Ovechkin that the team will continue to chase Stanley Cups while he chases the NHL’s all-time scoring record. The Capitals lost 440 man games to injury last season, so Carbery will have his work cut out for him to keep the team competitive.

Carbery’s Reaction

Carbery is thrilled to return to the Capitals organization and lead the team. He expressed his gratitude to the Capitals for affording him the opportunity and thanked the Maple Leafs organization for their support over the past two years. He looks forward to working with the talented players and building upon the winning culture in place.

Spencer Carbery is the Washington Capitals’ new head coach, and he has big shoes to fill after Laviolette’s departure. However, Carbery is a rising star in the coaching world, and the Capitals are confident in his abilities to lead the team to success. With his leadership, communication skills, and ability to develop players, Carbery is poised to build upon the winning culture in place and continue the team’s pursuit of the Stanley Cup.
