Alonso Aims for More Podiums Despite Red Bull Dominance

Fernando Alonso has expressed his desire to achieve more podium finishes despite the dominance of Red Bull in the Formula One races. Alonso, who finished third in the Miami Grand Prix, noted that his team’s perspective on success is beginning to shift, but he is also aware that it would take a significant Red Bull mistake for him to finish any higher. Alonso’s Aston rivals, Mercedes and Ferrari, both struggled on race pace, leaving the Spaniard in no man’s land to finish 21 seconds behind second-placed Sergio Perez and seven seconds ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell.

Alonso acknowledged that he expected a more competitive race this weekend as Ferrari and Mercedes could not back up their recent improvements. The two-time world champion admitted that it was a lonely race with nothing to do in front of them with the Red Bulls and behind them. Despite this, he still commended his team-mate Lance Stroll on a tidy overtake he had spotted on the big screens around the Miami International Autodrome.

Alonso Optimistic About Future Races

Alonso is optimistic about future races and the possibility of achieving more podiums. The driver has already scored 15 points in every 2023 race weekend so far, missing the podium in Baku but adding to his tally there in 2023’s first sprint race. Alonso conceded that at the beginning of the year, a podium finish was amazing, but now, after achieving four podiums in five grands prix, the team wants more, including a second place.

The two Red Bulls have been unstoppable in recent races, but Alonso is hopeful that there is still a chance to overtake them. He believes that maybe in Monaco and Barcelona, there is a possibility of achieving a better result. Alonso heads to the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in two weeks’ time with a 19-point advantage on Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in the battle for third behind the dominant Red Bulls. Aston’s rivals, Mercedes and Ferrari, are expected to come back stronger in the next few races, and Alonso and his team will need to remain focused on their goals.
