Becky Sauerbrunn Will Not Be Included in the USWNT Squad for the Women’s World Cup

Becky Sauerbrunn, the United States captain and experienced defender, will not be competing in the Women’s World Cup due to a foot injury she suffered in April. Sauerbrunn, who has won two World Cups with the USWNT, confirmed that she will not recover in time to participate in the tournament that begins on July 20 in Australia and New Zealand. She expressed her disappointment in a statement, saying, “Heartbroken isn’t even the half of it. But that’s sports for you and that’s life.” Sauerbrunn worked hard to make it back to the team in time for the tournament, but unfortunately, her return to play timeline is too variable.

According to sources close to the situation, Sauerbrunn suffered a foot setback on June 3 while playing for the Portland Thorns FC, her first match since the injury. The 38-year-old defender added that she would be working hard to get back on the field as soon as possible and that it had been an honor to work and play alongside her teammates.

Other Injured American Players to Miss the Tournament

Sauerbrunn is one of many American players who will miss the tournament due to injury. Attacker Mallory Swanson went down with a knee injury in April, while midfield stalwarts Sam Mewis and Catarina Macario are also sidelined for the title-holders. Sauerbrunn, who has 216 international appearances, is one of the team’s longest-standing players. She played a significant role in helping the Americans win World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019. Her most recent international appearance was a friendly against Ireland in April.

Head coach Vlatko Andonovski is expected to announce his 23-player squad for the Women’s World Cup soon, and reports indicate that he informed players on Thursday of his plans to include them. Sauerbrunn’s absence will undoubtedly be felt, but the team has a strong roster and is poised to compete for another trophy.

While Sauerbrunn’s injury is a significant setback for the USWNT, her absence represents an opportunity for other players to step up and make a name for themselves on the world stage. The Women’s World Cup is a highly competitive tournament, and every team must be prepared to face unexpected challenges. The USWNT has a history of overcoming adversity and coming out on top, and this year’s tournament will be no different. The team has everything they need to bring home their fifth trophy, including the unwavering support of their fans and the unyielding belief of their former captain, Becky Sauerbrunn.
