Browns Quarterback Watson Hints at Desire to Reunite with Hopkins

Deshaun Watson, quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, revealed in an interview on Tuesday that he would be thrilled if his former Houston Texans teammate DeAndre Hopkins joined him in Cleveland. Hopkins, a three-time All-Pro receiver, was recently released by the Arizona Cardinals, giving him the opportunity to join another team for the upcoming season. Watson hinted that he had already communicated his desire for the Browns to make a run for Hopkins to the team’s front office. However, he acknowledged that the decision ultimately lies with the Browns management.

Watson and Hopkins enjoyed a close relationship during their time together at Houston. Watson expressed that he and Hopkins have been talking since their Houston days and that Hopkins has always been like a brother to him. He also stated that their connection and relationship has always been great, and they would love to play together again. Hopkins has hired Klutch Sports to represent him after representing himself.

Hopkins had a prolific season with Watson in 2020, finishing with 104 catches for 1,165 yards and seven touchdowns. However, in his last two seasons with Arizona, Hopkins combined for just 106 catches over 19 games. Despite this, several teams, including other AFC rivals, are expected to pursue him.

In a recent interview with the “I Am Athlete” podcast with Brandon Marshall, Hopkins revealed that he is looking for three things in a team at this stage of his career, including stable management, a quarterback who “loves the game like I do,” and “a great defense.” Watson believes that the Browns match all these criteria and that Hopkins would love to be part of the team. However, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski declined to comment on the team’s interest in Hopkins, stating that he was pleased with the team’s current wide receiver room.

The Browns’ interest in Hopkins aligns with their overall roster strategy, which has been to build a strong team that can compete on the national stage. The team has made several offseason additions, including the signing of star safety John Johnson III, which has bolstered its defense.

Watson’s comments suggest that he would love to reunite with Hopkins in Cleveland, and the Browns could be a great fit for Hopkins at this stage of his career. However, it remains to be seen whether the Browns will pursue Hopkins and if he will ultimately choose to join the team.
