Colorado Rockies Pitcher Sustains Skull Fracture and Concussion After Being Hit By Line Drive

During a game against the Philadelphia Phillies, Colorado Rockies pitcher Ryan Feltner sustained a skull fracture and concussion after being hit by a line drive from Phillies’ Nick Castellanos. The incident occurred in the second inning when Castellanos hit a slider at 92.7 mph back at the mound, hitting Feltner on the back right side of his head, causing him to fall to the ground. Feltner received assistance from two members of the Rockies athletic training staff and was able to walk off the field.

Feltner was taken to the Swedish Medical Center for treatment and was discharged the following day. Fortunately, he will not require surgery. Colorado manager Bud Black stated that “overall, he’s fine” and that “it could have been worse.” Feltner has been placed on the 15-day injured list. However, Black stated that Feltner will likely be out for more than a few days.

Riley Pint to Replace Feltner for the Rockies

Right-hander Riley Pint has been recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to replace Feltner for the Rockies. Pint has a 7.41 ERA in 13 appearances this season. Black stated that the team will need a starter for Feltner’s spot and that the process will be addressed during the week.

In addition to Feltner’s injury, Colorado first baseman C.J. Cron left the game during the third inning due to back spasms. He was tended to by athletic trainers before being replaced by Mike Moustakas. Black stated that Cron will likely be heading to the injured list.

Despite Feltner’s injury and Cron’s early departure, the Rockies managed to secure a 4-0 victory over the Phillies. Black stated that Feltner was “still fairly lucid” and has been texting with his teammates, parents, team medical staff, and manager. Black believes that Feltner will be back with the team soon but will require time for his fractures to heal and his concussion to diminish.
