Defending Champion Ons Jabeur Withdraws from Madrid Open Due to Injury

Ons Jabeur, the defending champion of the Madrid Open, has withdrawn from the tournament due to an injured left calf. The 28-year-old from Tunisia, who is ranked fourth in the world, had to stop playing in her semifinal match against Iga Swiatek while trailing 3-0 in the first set at the clay-court tournament in Stuttgart, Germany.

Jabeur announced on her Twitter account on Monday that she had undergone “many medical exams,” which revealed a “small tear” in her calf. She expressed her sadness over the situation and said that she would need more time to recover from the injury. As a result, she will not be able to compete in the Madrid Open.

High-Profile Withdrawals from the Madrid Open

Jabeur is not the only high-profile player to withdraw from the Madrid Open. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, both 22-time Grand Slam champions, have also pulled out of the tournament. Their withdrawals have left the competition wide open for other players.

Jabeur’s Past and Future Performances

Jabeur was the runner-up at two Grand Slam tournaments in 2022: Wimbledon and the US Open. She was also one of the title favorites at last year’s French Open due to her success on red clay, including her victory in Madrid. However, she lost in the first round at Roland Garros.

The injury to Jabeur’s calf will undoubtedly hamper her preparation for this year’s French Open, which begins on May 28. She will need to recover quickly if she hopes to regain her form and compete at the highest level in the upcoming Grand Slam tournament.
