Former Jackson State coach Deion Sanders expressed his disappointment on Twitter over the lack of HBCU players picked during the NFL draft. Sanders praised his former player, cornerback and returner Isaiah Bolden, who was selected by the New England Patriots in the seventh round. Sanders congratulated him but expressed his shame towards the 31 NFL teams that couldn’t find draft value in all of the talented HBCU players. Sanders claimed that Jackson State had three more draft-worthy players.
HBCU Players Overlooked
Sanders’ post followed the draft where only one HBCU player was picked, unlike last year’s draft where four HBCU players were selected. Bolden, who has one year of starting experience, led the FCS in kick return average in 2021 with a 36.9-yard average. Bolden is the second Jackson State player who played under Sanders to be drafted. The other was linebacker James Houston, who was selected by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round last year.
NFL’s Commitment to HBCU Players
The NFL started a combine for HBCU players in 2020, although the first year it was held was 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, the combine was hosted by the HBCU Legacy Bowl, a postseason all-star game to showcase HBCU players. This year, 47 players took part in the event, which was attended by all 32 teams. The NFL is trying to boost the number of HBCU players in the draft by creating opportunities for teams to evaluate their skills.
Sanders’ critique of the NFL is valid as HBCU players deserve to be given equal opportunities in the NFL draft. The NFL’s commitment to HBCU players is commendable, but it’s essential for teams to recognize the talent of these players and provide them with opportunities to showcase their skills.
