Edoardo Mortara to leave Maserati MSG ahead of 2023-24 Formula E season

Swiss-Italian driver Edoardo Mortara is set to leave Maserati MSG ahead of the 2023-24 Formula E season. Mortara joined the team in 2017 when it was known as Venturi and quickly made an impact, achieving a podium finish in only his second race in Hong Kong. Throughout his tenure with the squad, Mortara secured an impressive 12 podiums, including six wins, making him a strong contender for the championship in both the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.

However, Mortara’s most recent campaign with the newly rebranded Maserati MSG team was far from successful. Despite his previous successes, he failed to reach the podium in any of the 16 races in the 2022-23 season, finishing a disappointing 14th in the drivers’ standings, a significant 62 points behind his teammate Maximilian Guenther.

Following the underwhelming season, it was officially announced on Friday that Mortara would be parting ways with the team ahead of the upcoming season. Reflecting on his time with Maserati MSG, Mortara expressed gratitude for the opportunity he had been given. He said, “The past six years of my career have been quite a journey, and it has been an honor to represent the team during this time…I’m proud of the role I played in this. I want to take this opportunity to thank the team for their trust in me and their support, I wish them the best of luck for the future.”

As Mortara bids farewell to Maserati MSG, his future plans for the 2024 season remain uncertain. It is yet to be confirmed if he will continue participating in Formula E or explore other racing opportunities. Fans and industry experts eagerly await news of his next move, eagerly speculating on which team he might join or if he may consider a shift to a different motorsport series.

Meanwhile, Maserati MSG is expected to announce its driver line-up for the upcoming season later this month. Finding a suitable replacement for Mortara will be crucial for the team’s success, as they aim to bounce back from a disappointing season and regain their competitive edge.

James Rossiter, team principal at Maserati MSG, expressed his gratitude towards Mortara for his contributions to the team throughout the years. Rossiter acknowledged Mortara’s experience, knowledge, and expertise as pivotal factors in the team’s development and growth. The departure of Mortara marks the end of an era for Maserati MSG, but it also presents an opportunity for new drivers to step up and make their mark in the world of Formula E.

As the 2023-24 Formula E season approaches, fans and teams alike eagerly anticipate the excitement and challenges that lie ahead. With driver movements and team dynamics continually evolving, Formula E continues to captivate motorsport enthusiasts around the world.
