Former NFL Player Arrested in Connection with Mother’s Death

Former NFL player Sergio Brown has been arrested in Southern California in connection with the death of his mother. Brown, 35, was detained on Tuesday afternoon as he tried to reenter the United States from Mexico. He was subsequently booked into San Diego County Jail without bail after a “fugitive arrest.” Authorities in Illinois, where the crime took place, have until November 13 to retrieve Brown, who has agreed to be extradited.

The exact charges against Brown have not been made public, but a warrant for his arrest cited first-degree murder. The Maywood, Illinois police department, responsible for the investigation, has not yet confirmed the specific charges. The search for Brown began after his mother, Myrtle Brown, was found dead near a creek in Maywood on September 16. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide and determined that she had been assaulted.

Following Myrtle Brown’s death, police began scrutinizing Instagram videos posted by Sergio Brown that appeared to discuss her death. In one video, posted on September 18, Brown dismisses reports about his mother’s death as “fake news” and suggests the FBI may be involved. Another video, posted on his Instagram story, shows Brown referencing the movie “Finding Nemo” and repeating the famous line, “Just keep swimming.” These videos, along with other evidence, likely contributed to Brown becoming a suspect in the case.

Sergio Brown, a graduate of Proviso East High School in Maywood, played college football for Notre Dame before entering the NFL. He served as a defensive back from 2010 through 2016, playing for the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills. It remains uncertain how this arrest will affect his NFL career, especially considering the seriousness of the charges against him.

The arrest of former NFL player Sergio Brown in connection with his mother’s death has shocked both the sports world and the local community. While the exact charges against Brown are still unclear, the warrant for his arrest has cited first-degree murder. The Instagram videos posted by Brown following his mother’s death have added to the suspicion surrounding him. As authorities in Illinois work to retrieve Brown for trial, the future of his NFL career hangs in the balance. This case serves as a tragic reminder that even those in the public eye are not exempt from the consequences of their actions.
