Former Texans Defensive End Jadeveon Clowney Open to Returning to Houston

Jadeveon Clowney, former defensive end for the Houston Texans, is interested in returning to the team where his career began. Clowney is currently a free agent after playing for the Cleveland Browns for the past two seasons. During his tenure with the Browns, he was able to accumulate 11 sacks and 15 tackles for loss. In an interview with KRIV-TV in Houston, Clowney stated that he and his representatives had a conversation with the Texans during the offseason, indicating his interest in returning to the team.

Clowney’s Connection to Houston

Clowney expressed his connection to Houston, stating that all of his family and friends are located in the area. Additionally, he mentioned that the people he works out with could help him take care of his body better if he returned to the team. He did acknowledge that he was unsure what the future held, but he remains a fan of the team’s new head coach, DeMeco Ryans.

Clowney’s Career with the Texans

The Texans selected Clowney with the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL draft. He played for the franchise for five seasons, earning three Pro Bowl selections and second-team All-Pro honors in 2016. During his time with the team, Clowney had 29 sacks and 64 tackles for loss. The Texans traded Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks in 2019 for defensive end Jacob Martin, outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo, and a 2020 third-round pick. Clowney played one season in Seattle before joining the Tennessee Titans in 2020.

Potential Return to the Texans

If Clowney were to return to the Texans, he would join a defensive line room that has undergone some changes during the offseason. The team signed defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins and drafted defensive end Will Anderson at No. 3 in an attempt to improve a unit that ranked 30th in total defense and allowed the sixth-most rushing yards in a season in NFL history (2,894). It remains to be seen whether the Texans will pursue Clowney’s return, but he has expressed his willingness to rejoin the team.
