Formula 1 Drivers Cast Doubt Over Tyre-Warming Blankets

Tyre-warming blankets were set to be banned in the next Formula 1 season. However, the rules were later changed to allow their use, giving the FIA the option to re-impose the ban if they so choose. The decision will be made by the end of July.

Drivers’ Concerns

Four drivers took part in a Pirelli test at Barcelona after the Spanish Grand Prix, including Mercedes driver Russell, Mercedes reserve Mick Schumacher, and Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Although the test reportedly went well, drivers have expressed concerns about the suitability of the blanket-free tyres for racing.

Russell suggested that the blanket-free tyres may have been flattered by the high temperatures and track characteristics at Barcelona. He believes that the tyres would be difficult to manage in colder conditions, especially during pit stops and out laps. He expressed concern for the safety of mechanics and drivers, suggesting that crashes would be likely to occur.

Leclerc echoed Russell’s concerns, suggesting that it is too early to say whether the tyres can be raced. He wants to see how the tyres perform in less favourable conditions before making a decision. Leclerc also highlighted the difficulty of managing the tyres when racing other cars on track.

Fernando Alonso, who used tyres without blankets in his Indianapolis 500 campaigns, said that he is not a fan of removing the blankets. He believes that it depends on the specific circuit and the amount of energy put into the tyres. He suggested that some circuits would make things very difficult without the blankets.

Conclusion

Drivers have cast doubt over the suitability of tyre-warming blankets in Formula 1. While the Pirelli test at Barcelona reportedly went well, drivers are concerned about the tyres’ performance in colder conditions and during pit stops and out laps. The FIA will make a final decision by the end of July on whether to reimpose the ban on tyre-warming blankets.
