Freshman Ethan Quinn of Georgia and Fangran Tian of UCLA emerged victorious in the NCAA tennis tournament on Saturday. Quinn, a redshirt, made a comeback after losing the first set to beat Michigan’s Ondrej Styler 6-7(2), 7-6(5), 6-2, becoming the third Bulldog and fourth-ever freshman to win the men’s singles crown. Quinn faced four match points in the second set before taking control in the third to join two-time Georgia winners Mikael Pernfors (1984, 1985) and Matias Boeker (2001, 2002). Quinn, from Fresno, California, ended the season with 17 consecutive wins and a 34-10 record.
Women’s Singles Title
Tian, from Beijing, China, won the women’s singles title, becoming the second Bruin to capture the title. She beat Layne Sleeth from Oklahoma 6-4, 6-2 in Orlando, Florida, without dropping a single set in six matches. Keri Phebus of UCLA won the title in 1995.
Men’s Doubles Title
In men’s doubles, Andrew Lutschaunig and James Trotter of Ohio State won the championship after defeating Cleeve Harper and Eliot Spizzirri of Texas 6-4, 6-4. It was the second doubles championship for the Buckeyes, having won their first in 2012. Harper won the title last year with Richard Ciamarra, beating the Ohio State team of Matej Vocel and Robert Cash.
Women’s Doubles Title
The women’s doubles championship was an all-North Carolina matchup, where Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig defeated teammates Reese Brantmeier and Elizabeth Scott 6-1, 2-6, 11-9. It was the third doubles crown in program history.
Last weekend, North Carolina won its first women’s team championship, and Virginia successfully defended its men’s title.
