Houston Rockets Hire Ime Udoka as Head Coach

The Houston Rockets have announced that Ime Udoka will be their new head coach. Udoka was previously suspended and dismissed by the Boston Celtics for engaging in an improper workplace relationship. Before offering the job to Udoka, the Rockets thoroughly investigated the situation with the league office and the Celtics.

Impact of Hiring

As a head coach, Udoka took the Celtics to the NBA Finals in his first season. His ability to motivate players and command respect were key factors in the Rockets’ decision to hire him. The team hopes that Udoka’s leadership will help them improve upon their poor record of 22-60 last season.

Rockets general manager Rafael Stone was able to persuade Udoka to join the team by highlighting their young talent, salary cap space, and the possibility of winning the draft lottery and selecting Victor Wembanyama, a generational talent.

Other Candidates and Controversy

The Rockets’ coaching search also included former Lakers coach Frank Vogel and former Charlotte coach James Borrego, but Udoka was ultimately chosen. The Brooklyn Nets had considered hiring Udoka as well, but decided to promote interim coach Jacque Vaughn instead.

An independent law firm had investigated Udoka’s conduct and found that he had used inappropriate language with a female subordinate before engaging in an improper relationship with her. This was a significant factor in his suspension and dismissal from the Celtics. However, the Rockets believe that Udoka’s vision for the team aligns with their goals and are confident that he will be a strong leader for the franchise.
