Following the Philadelphia 76ers’ first-round sweep of the Brooklyn Nets, guard James Harden spoke about his motivations for the season beyond winning a championship. He repeatedly used the word “sacrifice” to describe his approach. Harden stated that he had decided to let go of everything, including his role and salary, in order to focus on the team’s success.
Harden’s role in the 76ers’ offense has been primarily that of a facilitator, allowing MVP favorite Joel Embiid and young guard Tyrese Maxey to handle the scoring duties. As a result, his points, field goal attempts, and free throw attempts per game have all dropped compared to previous seasons.
Harden’s former teammate with the Houston Rockets, P.J. Tucker, believes that the star player’s willingness to make sacrifices is crucial to the team’s success. Tucker stated that, although Harden could still perform at his previous level, he needs to work alongside another star player like Embiid to win a championship.
The 76ers face the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals, with Harden’s contributions crucial to the team’s prospects. Harden’s pay cut last summer allowed the 76ers to sign other key players, and he has spent the past 15 months adjusting to his new role in the team. The Harden-Embiid pick-and-roll combination has generated an impressive 17.5 points per game off their actions, making them the league’s most potent one-two punch.
Although Harden’s performance against the Nets was underwhelming, with a poor paint field goal percentage, 76ers coach Doc Rivers remains confident in his abilities. However, Embiid’s injury status remains uncertain, and the 76ers may miss out on another chance to break through to the conference finals.
For Harden, this may be his best shot at winning an NBA title. He has already had a few good opportunities in the past, but this season presents a genuine chance to shine. According to 76ers President of Basketball Operations, Daryl Morey, Harden’s desire to win the championship is evident, and the team is ready to support him in this pursuit.
