Leeds United fan charged with assault on Newcastle United manager

On Saturday, a Leeds United fan was charged with assault after running into the technical area and pushing Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe at Elland Road. Following the incident, Leeds issued a lifetime ban on the supporter. The fan was escorted away by security after getting into the face of the Newcastle boss. West Yorkshire Police said on Twitter on Sunday that the man has been charged with assault and entering the field of play during the Leeds United versus Newcastle United football match. The man has been bailed to appear before magistrates on July 21.

Howe speaks out about the incident

After the game, Howe spoke to BT Sport about the incident, saying that he was surprised and concentrating on the game. It was the last thing he thought could happen. Howe added that the incident was personal to him, and he can’t remember if he was pushed or not. He further stated that moments like that made him think about the need to be mindful of security. Nobody should feel that their personal safety is violated, especially when trying to entertain the country. Although he didn’t have time to be fearful, the incident made him think about things after.

Leeds United’s draw with Newcastle United

Leeds United took the lead in the seventh minute through captain Luke Ayling before Callum Wilson scored two penalties either side of half-time to put Newcastle United ahead. Leeds United managed to rescue a point late on through defender Rasmus Kristensen before Junior Firpo was sent off in stoppage time. Leeds United is still in the relegation zone but moves up one spot to 18th on 31 points, one point behind Everton in 17th, while Newcastle United remains third in the table on 66 points.

In conclusion, the incident at Elland Road is a reminder that security is essential in football matches. It is unacceptable for anyone to feel that their safety is violated while trying to enjoy a game. Football clubs must ensure that they have adequate security measures in place to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
