Long-time St. Louis Cardinals Broadcaster Passes Away

Mike Shannon, a beloved St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster and two-time World Series winner, passed away on Saturday night at the age of 83. The team announced his death without disclosing the cause. Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt Jr. praised Shannon’s passion for the game, his team, and the St. Louis community. Shannon spent 50 years in the broadcast booth beginning in 1972 after playing nine seasons with the Cardinals and holding a brief front-office position.

Shannon’s Influence on Broadcasting and Baseball

Joe Buck, a former radio partner of Shannon’s and a lifelong friend, expressed his admiration for Shannon’s impact on his career and the world of baseball. Buck noted that Shannon had a keen eye for talent and trends and admired the fact that Shannon was always having fun. Shannon was affectionately known as “The Moon Man” by St. Louis fans due to his colorful tales in the booth.

Shannon’s Unique Impact on Cardinals Fans

Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed his condolences, acknowledging Shannon’s deep connection with Cardinals fans. Chip Caray, a fellow Cardinals broadcaster, recalled Shannon’s unique ability to make people laugh and his status as one of the great characters of the game and the industry. Shannon is survived by his second wife, two sons, three daughters, 18 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. The legacy of this beloved and influential broadcaster will be felt for many years to come.
