Miami Dolphins Sign Offensive Tackle Isaiah Wynn to One-Year Deal

The Miami Dolphins have signed offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn to a one-year deal, according to sources. Wynn was selected by the New England Patriots in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft, and played four seasons at left tackle before switching to right tackle in 2022.

While Dolphins general manager Chris Grier previously stated that Austin Jackson is expected to start at right tackle, the position is not yet set in stone. Jackson played in just two games at right tackle last season due to an ankle injury, and the team recently drafted Ryan Hayes in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL draft.

Wynn, 27, will likely compete with Jackson for the right tackle job this summer, and also offers the flexibility to play left tackle if needed. Pro Bowler Terron Armstead has missed three or more games in nine of his 10 NFL seasons, making Wynn’s versatility a valuable asset.

Wynn played in 43 of a possible 82 regular-season games for the Patriots, with various injuries limiting his playing time. Despite the Patriots picking up his $10.4 million fifth-year option for the 2022 season, Wynn’s time with the franchise ended after just nine games due to a hip injury.

The Patriots had hoped for Wynn to become a reliable left tackle, much like Matt Light did in the first half of Bill Belichick’s tenure as head coach. Despite not having the typical physical makeup for a left tackle, Wynn’s athleticism has been highly rated by some teams.

Wynn did not attend voluntary offseason workouts in 2022, and was moved from left tackle to right tackle when training camp began. He struggled with the adjustment, noting that “playing left all the time and then having to flip, that’s like you being right-handed and then you’re trying to write with your left hand.”

With the addition of Wynn, the Dolphins hope to add depth and competition to their offensive line. While Jackson is expected to start at right tackle, Wynn’s versatility and experience make him a valuable asset to the team.
