According to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals will play in the annual “Field of Dreams” game in 2024 at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Rickwood Field is the oldest professional ballpark in the country, having opened in 1910. MLB has not yet made an official statement regarding the game.
Giant’s Player’s Reaction to the Game
Giants first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr. expressed excitement about the possibility of wearing throwback jerseys for the game. He said, “It’ll definitely give you the full effect of the game. I hope it is us who wears the jerseys for sure. That would be something to remember forever.” Hall of Famer Willie Mays, a Giants legend, played at Rickwood Field when he was a member of the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro Leagues.
History of the “Field of Dreams” Game
The first two “Field of Dreams” games were played in Dyersville, Iowa, on the site of the popular movie with the same name. The inaugural game was played in 2021 between the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees, while the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds played in 2022. Both games took place on the second Thursday of August. The Iowa site is currently under construction and no game is scheduled for this season.
Historic Location for Films and Sports
Rickwood Field has been used as a filming location for several movies, including “Cobb” (1994), “Soul of the Game” (1996), and “42” (2013). It is one of only two Negro League ballparks still standing, along with Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, New Jersey. Rickwood Field is also the home field of Miles College, a historically Black college and university in Fairfield, Alabama.
