Paris Saint-Germain: The Choices to Make for the Next Season

As another summer approaches, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) faces a crucial set of decisions to make. The 2022-23 campaign has been a tough ride both on and off the pitch, with the club failing to win the Champions League again, ill-discipline burdening the squad, and a need to change despite being on the verge of a French record 11th straight Ligue 1 title. To fix this mess, PSG needs to evolve and make the right decisions.

The fans’ priority is to see a proper PSG team next season, one that is not just a group of 11 individuals trying to find each other or improvise, but a team with patterns of play, a style of football, new ideas, and unpredictable movement. PSG’s recent managers, Christophe Galtier and Mauricio Pochettino, received criticism from players for neglecting team tactics. PSG has great stars like Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe, but that’s only one element of a successful team. PSG needs to focus on pressing and have an answer against an aggressive team, with a clear idea of how to move the ball properly.

The Right Manager for the Job

To become a proper team, PSG needs the right manager. PSG has a history of appointing the wrong coaches, which needs to change. Galtier, who joined in July 2022, was never good enough, and Pochettino had to compromise himself too much to succeed properly. The rot goes back further to Thomas Tuchel, Unai Emery, and Laurent Blanc. This time, whoever occupies the bench has to be the right fit, someone with a real identity and philosophy, the right degree of adaptability to an evolving team, and a strong personality to cope with the spotlight in Paris. The chosen candidate will have to be as close as possible to this profile.

The Right Players for the Manager

PSG’s sporting director, Luis Campos, and the club’s owner must first appoint the manager and then deliver the players he’ll need. PSG will stop going down the road of just signing superstars and focus on younger players, mostly French and, ideally, from Paris. The likes of Manu Koné, Kephren Thuram, Randall Kolo Muani, Moussa Diaby, Rayan Cherki, and Evan N’Dicka are all on the transfer list. Bernardo Silva, who is keen to join PSG, is an exception, and Victor Osimhen and Harry Kane will be more challenging to sign due to the amount of interest in both.

PSG needs to make the right decisions for the next season. The club needs to evolve, focus on team tactics, appoint the right manager, and sign the right players. PSG has to make these changes to win the Champions League and not just rely on signing superstars. PSG needs a proper team with a style of football, new ideas, and unpredictable movement. PSG fans want to see a team with passing triangles, intelligence, and structure. PSG has to change to become a proper team, and the club’s owners have to make the right decisions.
