Promising Cardinals Rookie Jordan Walker Optioned to Triple-A Memphis

Jordan Walker, a rookie outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals, has been optioned to Triple-A Memphis following a slump in which he went 7-for-35 in his last 10 games. Despite opening the season with a record-tying 12-game hitting streak and hitting .353 through April 10, Walker’s average has dropped to .274 with three doubles, two home runs, and 11 RBI. In addition, he has struck out 20 times in 73 at-bats.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol explained that the decision to send Walker down was made to give other outfielders on the team more opportunities while allowing the 20-year-old more experience in the minor leagues. Marmol emphasized that it would be “crazy” to think that Walker wouldn’t be returning to the big league club. He also mentioned that the team has a “real superstar” in Walker and that they want to ensure they are doing what is best for him.

Adjustments to be Made in Triple-A

Walker, a first-round pick out of high school in 2020, made the jump from Double-A to the majors this March and tied a century-old record for the longest hitting streak to begin a career by a player age 20 or younger. However, he had only played in four of the Cardinals’ previous six games and had only four games this season with multiple hits.

Marmol stated that Triple-A will provide Walker with more experience against veteran pitchers who are more focused on making pitches rather than overpowering hitters. This change in approach will allow for Walker to make the necessary adjustments to his mechanics and approach. Marmol believes that this will better prepare him to help the Cardinals win once he returns to the big league club.

Marmol also pointed out that there are five outfielders on the team who are all deserving of playing every day, but that the logjam made it difficult for any of them to get into a rhythm. By sending Walker down, the team hopes to give some of these players more consistent playing time while also allowing Walker to develop his skills in the minors. Ultimately, the Cardinals are confident that Walker will return to the majors and continue to be a valuable asset to the team.
