Rams Draft Georgia Quarterback Stetson Bennett as Backup to Matthew Stafford

After joking about carrying only one quarterback on their roster for the entire season, the Los Angeles Rams drafted Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett in the fourth round. Prior to the draft, Matthew Stafford was the only quarterback on the team’s roster. Stafford has been in the concussion protocol twice in the past season and ended the season on injured reserve with a spinal cord contusion.

Bennett’s Response

Bennett said he’s excited to work with head coach Sean McVay, who he’s heard is a genius. The quarterback did not visit Los Angeles prior to the draft. He also addressed a misdemeanor public intoxication charge in Dallas in January when speaking with the Rams, but most of their conversations were football-related. Bennett will step in as the Rams’ backup quarterback and is excited to learn from Stafford, who is considered one of the most talented quarterbacks to ever play the game.

Bennett’s Accomplishments

Bennett led Georgia to back-to-back national championships in the past two seasons and finished his Georgia career with a record of 29-3 as a starting quarterback, the second-best record in SEC history with at least 30 starts. He became the first quarterback in Georgia history to throw for more than 4,000 yards in a single season in 2022. Bennett was the fifth SEC quarterback drafted, tying the most quarterbacks drafted from a single conference in the common draft era, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Rams director of draft management JW Jordan described Bennett as “more than just a cog in the wheel.” According to Jordan, Bennett is highly accurate, tough, and competitive, and is driving the bus. The Rams traded into the fourth round on Day 2 to acquire the pick from the New York Giants.
