Tampa Bay Lightning Sign Restricted Free Agent Forward Tanner Jeannot to Two-Year Contract

Tanner Jeannot, a forward who was acquired by the Tampa Bay Lightning in a trade with the Nashville Predators last season, has officially signed a two-year contract with the team. General manager Julien BriseBois announced the signing, revealing that the deal has an average annual value of $2.665 million. This contract ensures that the Lightning’s offense will have the services of Jeannot, a rugged winger who could see an increase in production now that he will have a full season under coach Jon Cooper’s system.

Back in February, the Predators traded Jeannot, who is 26 years old, to the Lightning in exchange for a substantial package. The deal included defenseman Cal Foote, as well as the Lightning’s third, fourth, and fifth-round picks in the 2023 NHL Draft, a second-round pick in the 2024 Draft, and a protected first-round selection in the 2025 Draft.

During his 20 regular-season games with the Lightning, Jeannot’s offensive output was modest, as he managed to score only one goal and accumulate four points. However, he proved to be an asset in other areas of the game, blocking 11 shots and delivering a remarkable 77 hits. In the playoffs, despite the Lightning’s first-round exit against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Jeannot showcased his physicality by delivering 16 hits and blocking two shots in just three games.

However, the Lightning organization expects more from Jeannot based on his impressive second season with the Predators. In the 2020-2021 campaign, Jeannot played in 15 games and displayed his offensive capabilities by scoring 24 goals and tallying 41 points. He also accumulated 130 penalty minutes and recorded an average ice time of 15 minutes and 59 seconds. Additionally, Jeannot showcased his clutch factor by netting five game-winning goals.

When Jeannot is at the top of his game, he plays much bigger than his listed measurements of 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds. He is also a valuable asset on the penalty kill, where he can eat up crucial minutes. However, Jeannot faced some challenges during his debut season with the Lightning, as injuries forced him to miss four of the team’s seven playoff games against the Maple Leafs.

Reflecting on his transition to a new team, Jeannot acknowledged that it was an adjustment to adapt to a new environment. However, he expressed gratitude towards his new teammates and coaches for their warm welcome and support in helping him acclimate to the Lightning’s systems.

Combining his stints with the Predators and the Lightning last season, Jeannot ended the campaign with six goals and 18 points. With his physicality and potential to contribute offensively, Jeannot’s signing adds depth and an extra dimension to the Lightning’s forward group. With a full season ahead and further familiarity with the team’s systems, Jeannot has the opportunity to make a significant impact on the Lightning’s quest for success in the upcoming season.
