The highly anticipated qualifying session at the racing circuit was met with unforeseen delays. Originally scheduled to start at a specific time, heavy rain caused standing water on the track, making it unsafe for the drivers to compete. As a result, the start of the session was delayed by more than three and a half hours. However, once the weather cleared up and the track dried, the session finally commenced.
Scott McLaughlin delivered an impressive performance during the qualifying session and secured pole position for the race. He lapped the 11-turn, 2.1-mile temporary street course with a best lap time of 1m14.6099s. This remarkable feat places him at the forefront of the starting grid.
O’Ward and Herta Trail Behind
Following closely behind McLaughlin are Pato O’Ward and Colton Herta. O’Ward, representing Arrow McLaren, showcased his racing prowess and claimed the second position on the grid. However, he fell short of McLaughlin’s lap time by 0.3296s. Herta, from the Andretti team, also put up a commendable performance and secured the third place on the starting grid.
Herta expressed his frustration with Romain Grosjean’s team, blaming them for releasing his car just moments before he took to the track. Herta believed that this hindered his chances of securing a spot on the front row. Not all drivers were able to proceed to the next stage of qualifying. Will Power, Kyle Kirkwood, Josef Newgarden, Alexander Rossi, Linus Lundqvist, and Scott Dixon were among the unfortunate contestants who failed to make it through. Dixon’s chances were cut short after he crashed heavily at Turn 11 in the closing moments of the session. Despite his setback, Dixon will start in 12th position for the race.
In the group stage of qualifying, McLaughlin demonstrated his dominance by setting the fastest time in his group. His lap time of 1m15.1629s placed him half a second ahead of Dixon, Malukas, Rossi, Newgarden, and Lundqvist. However, Christian Lundgaard, Graham Rahal, Helio Castroneves, Rinus VeeKay, Santino Ferrucci, Agustin Canapino, and Benjamin Pedersen were unable to progress to the next stage.
In the other group, Herta emerged as the leader with the quickest time of 1m15.0030s. He was closely followed by Kirkwood, Palou, O’Ward, Grosjean, and Power. Unfortunately, Felix Rosenqvist, Marcus Armstrong, Callum Ilott, Marcus Ericsson, Jack Harvey, Sting Ray Robb, Devlin DeFrancesco, and Ryan Hunter-Reay did not make it any further in the qualifying session.
With McLaughlin securing pole position and O’Ward and Herta hot on his heels, the race promises to be an exhilarating spectacle.
