The Las Vegas Raiders have made a significant move to strengthen their secondary by signing three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Peters. Although the terms of the contract have not been disclosed, reports suggest that Peters has agreed to a one-year deal. This signing comes as the team looks to address their defensive needs and improve their performance in the upcoming season.
Peters, a 30-year-old veteran with seven years of experience, unfortunately missed the entire 2021 season due to a torn ACL. Despite this setback, the Raiders recognized his potential and decided to make him their new acquisition. Peters had a relatively quiet season last year, recording only one interception while playing for the Baltimore Ravens. However, his career total of 32 interceptions surpasses that of all the Raiders’ current cornerbacks combined.
The Raiders struggled in the interception department last season, with only six interceptions as a team, tying them for the lowest in the NFL. Additionally, only two interceptions were made by a cornerback, specifically backup player Amik Robertson. Las Vegas finished last in the league for interceptions in 2021. These statistics highlight the pressing need for an experienced and skilled cornerback like Peters.
An Accomplished Cornerback
Marcus Peters brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Raiders’ secondary, instantly becoming their most accomplished cornerback. He was initially drafted in the first round by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015 and made an immediate impact, being named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Peters led the league in interceptions with eight and also scored two touchdowns during his debut season.
Throughout his career, Peters has played for the Chiefs, the Los Angeles Rams, and most recently the Baltimore Ravens. His impressive record of 32 interceptions, six pick-sixes, and 822 interception return yards since 2015 makes him the active player with the highest numbers in these categories. Peters’ aggressive and emotional playing style has occasionally led to intense confrontations on the field, earning him a reputation for his passionate demeanor.
One particular incident that Raiders fans may remember involved Peters and their former quarterback, Derek Carr, during a game in 2017. Peters’ late hit on Carr nearly sparked a brawl between the teams, but it was stopped when Marshawn Lynch, a Raiders running back and Peters’ cousin, intervened to protect Peters. Both Peters and Lynch grew up in Oakland, California, adding an intriguing personal connection to their on-field encounter.
Despite being on his fourth team, this is the first time Peters has entered the free agent market. He was previously traded from the Chiefs to the Rams in 2018, and then from the Rams to the Ravens in the middle of the 2019 season. This opportunity to choose his next team allows Peters to evaluate his options and ultimately sign with the Raiders.
Weighing in at 6 feet tall and 197 pounds, Peters’ physical stature combined with his 346 career tackles and 11 forced fumbles solidify his status as a valuable addition to the Raiders’ defense. His presence in the secondary is expected to have a significant impact on the team’s overall performance in the upcoming season.
In addition to the signing of Marcus Peters, the Raiders also announced the acquisition of veteran free agent defensive end Isaac Rochell, who made one appearance for the team last season. This move further demonstrates the team’s commitment to strengthening their defense and addressing their needs in preparation for the upcoming season.
