The recent Red Bull Ring event turned into a chaotic affair as race control grappled with over 1200 alleged track limit offences. The overwhelming number of violations caused significant delays, resulting in the final race results being determined hours after the event concluded. This delay also led to several drivers, including Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton, receiving penalties that reshuffled the final standings. Sainz, who discovered his drop from fourth to sixth place just as he was leaving Austria, expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation. He emphasized the need for Formula 1 (F1) and the FIA to take decisive action to prevent such issues from recurring.
Time for Immediate Action on Track Limit Problems
Sainz believes that the time for action is now, urging F1 and the FIA to implement effective solutions for circuits facing track limit problems. While the FIA has proposed the construction of new gravel traps at the Red Bull Ring to address the issue, Sainz contends that more action is necessary. He remarked, “There have been numerous proposed solutions, but for some reason, we keep postponing them. It’s like an alarm constantly being delayed instead of taking proactive steps to find solutions for circuits facing these challenges.”
Sainz further suggested implementing a detection loop alongside the existing rule. This would enable immediate feedback for drivers, allowing them to correct track limit violations promptly. Reflecting on his own experience, Sainz shared the frustration he felt upon discovering the post-race penalty just as he was about to depart. He stated, “I was already quite upset about the entire day, and then suddenly, you’re taking off and you’re going to be one hour without the phone. Then the last thing you read before taking off is the second penalty and P6, so you can imagine how it felt.”
Despite his anger towards the situation in Austria, Sainz acknowledged that the turbulent weekend had prepared him for the unexpected. He expressed his determination to assist F1 and the FIA in finding solutions, emphasizing the sport’s need to avoid a repeat of such incidents. Sainz believes that the continuous issue of drivers running wide and subsequent track limit breaches contributed to the chaos witnessed at the Red Bull Ring, ultimately compromising the entire weekend for teams and drivers alike.
Sainz recounted his experience during Q2 in Austria, where he finished his lap uncertain of whether it had breached track limits.
