Tilman Fertitta Excited for Ime Udoka as Houston Rockets’ Head Coach

Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta recently announced the hiring of Ime Udoka as the head coach for the team, which he considers a significant step towards the franchise’s rebuilding process. Fertitta aims to bring the Rockets back to the playoffs after a three-year absence. He feels comfortable with Udoka’s appointment, particularly after discussions with NBA officials and the head coach.

Udoka was previously with the Boston Celtics, where he led the team to a 51-31 record and an NBA Finals appearance in his first season as head coach. However, he was suspended and eventually dismissed from the team after an independent law firm found that he had an improper relationship with a female subordinate. Udoka has since undergone leadership and sensitivity training, as well as counseling with his son, during his season away from the NBA.

Udoka’s Skills and Qualifications

Udoka is a former NBA player with a seven-year career as a role player. He is known for his toughness and intelligence, particularly during his nine years as an assistant coach. He served as an assistant coach for seven seasons under Gregg Popovich’s staff with the San Antonio Spurs, where he earned a reputation for being an excellent defensive coach. The Celtics also led the league in defensive efficiency during his tenure as head coach.

The Rockets chose Udoka over other experienced candidates such as former Los Angeles Lakers, Orlando Magic, and Indiana Pacers head coach Frank Vogel and ex-Charlotte Hornets head coach James Borrego. Udoka will inherit a team that has finished with the worst record in the Western Conference for three straight seasons. The Rockets plan to be aggressive in free agency with approximately $60 million in salary cap space.

Fertitta is excited about Udoka’s appointment and believes that he is the right person to lead the Rockets towards their goal of returning to the playoffs. He emphasizes the importance of coaching a basketball team while holding the players accountable, respectful, and tough. Fertitta hopes that Udoka’s appointment will bring the Rockets closer to winning a championship.
