Tom Brady to Join Las Vegas Raiders Ownership Group Pending NFL Approval

Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis has confirmed that he has reached an agreement with retired quarterback Tom Brady for him to join the Raiders ownership group. Davis made the announcement during the NFL spring meeting in Minneapolis, adding that the agreement is still pending NFL approval. If the partnership is approved, Brady will become the third player in the history of the National Football League to become an owner, joining George Halas and Jerry Richardson.

Brady’s Other Ownership Ventures

Brady is already part of Davis’ WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces ownership group, having acquired a stake in March. However, approval for his partnership with the Raiders requires at least 24 current NFL team owners to give their consent. Reports suggest that Brady’s 10-year, $375 million contract to broadcast NFL games with Fox, which is scheduled to start in 2024, will not be affected by his investment in the Raiders, as Fox has reportedly approved the arrangement.

In 2021 and 2022, Brady reportedly showed interest in a minority ownership stake with the Miami Dolphins. A six-month NFL investigation found that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and vice chairman/limited partner Bruce Beal had violated the league’s anti-tampering policy in conversations with Brady. As a result, the Dolphins were stripped of their first-round draft pick in last month’s draft.

Brady’s Role with the Raiders

Brady, who retired this offseason after 23 seasons in the NFL, is not expected to play again. Even if he did, any dual role as an owner and player with the Raiders would have to be approved by NFL owners. Brady would be joining a group of former Patriots in Las Vegas, including second-year Raiders coach Josh McDaniels, who was Brady’s offensive coordinator in New England from 2006 to 2008 and 2012 to 2019. General manager Dave Ziegler also came to the Raiders from New England, as have quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo and Brian Hoyer, edge rusher Chandler Jones, running back Brandon Bolden, fullback Jakob Johnson and wide receivers Jakobi Meyers and Phillip Dorsett.

The Raiders were interested in signing Brady as a free agent when the team relocated from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020. However, the move was scuttled by then-coach Jon Gruden. The Raiders signed Garoppolo, Brady’s backup in New England from 2014 to 2016, in free agency to be the team’s quarterback after moving on from nine-year starter Derek Carr.

Tom Brady’s potential partnership with the Las Vegas Raiders ownership group is pending NFL approval. Should the partnership be approved, Brady will become the third player in NFL history to become an owner. Brady’s investment in the Raiders will not affect his contract with Fox to broadcast NFL games starting in 2024. Brady is not expected to play again, and any dual role with the Raiders would need to be approved by NFL owners.
