Washington Commanders Decline Fifth-Year Option for Chase Young

Washington Commanders have chosen not to pick up the fifth-year option on defensive end Chase Young, which could lead to him becoming a free agent after the current season, according to multiple sources. The move doesn’t come as a surprise as Washington coach Ron Rivera had previously indicated that they would announce a decision on May 2. Rivera had been noncommittal about Young’s option throughout the offseason, but there was no hesitation in picking up fellow defensive end Montez Sweat’s fifth-year option last year.

Washington’s Potential Free Agent Defensive Ends

The decision not to exercise Young’s option means that Washington now has two possible free agent defensive ends next year. The Commanders would like to work out an extension with Montez Sweat, as one team source said, but if they don’t, both he and Young could become free agents after the 2023 season.

Young’s Health and Performance

Rivera has stated that they want to evaluate Young’s health and commitment after his 2021 knee injury. Young had not always worked out in Washington during previous offseasons, but not picking up the fifth year could motivate him, leading to a big season. Young suffered a torn ACL last year, causing him to miss the final seven games. However, he has received positive updates on his knee this offseason from Dr. James Andrews, who performed his surgery. Young had 1.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 4 quarterback hits before his injury.

Washington selected Young with the second overall pick in the 2020 draft, and he earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors with 7.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and 3 fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown. If Young has a great season, Washington could opt to use the franchise tag on him, with the 2023 figure for a defensive end franchise tag being $19.73 million.
