Washington Wizards Agree to Send Chris Paul to Golden State Warriors for Jordan Poole, Picks

The Washington Wizards have agreed to send Chris Paul, a future Hall of Fame point guard, to the Golden State Warriors for Jordan Poole, a protected 2030 first-round pick, and a 2027 second-round pick, sources have confirmed. This comes after the Wizards agreed to send Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Chris Paul, followed by a separate deal, where Paul was traded to the Golden State Warriors for Poole and draft compensation.

Details of the Deal

Under new president of basketball operations Michael Winger, the Washington Wizards have begun a complete roster overhaul. In the deal with the Phoenix Suns, the Wizards received Paul and Landry Shamet, as well as first-round pick swaps in 2024, 2026, 2028, and 2030, second-round picks from 2024 through 2028, plus 2030 and cash. Phoenix also received Jordan Goodwin and Isaiah Todd from the Wizards.

The Wizards agreed to wait to complete the Beal trade to allow them to relocate Paul to a third team to recoup additional assets, which turned out to be the Golden State Warriors. Although Paul brings a different way to attack defenses when Stephen Curry is off the court, he is likely to be a reserve player in his 19th NBA season.

The Warriors have to navigate the harsher penalties on big-spending teams imposed by the league’s new collective bargaining agreement. The team will have to sort out the possibility of a new contract with franchise cornerstone Draymond Green, who opted out of his contract earlier this month and became a free agent.

Impact on the Washington Wizards

Washington will receive Jordan Poole, who will step into the starting shooting guard spot vacated by Beal in the trade. Poole was the 28th pick in the 2019 NBA draft and developed into a dynamic scoring guard during his time with the Warriors. He averaged 24.6 points and 4.6 assists as a starter in 43 games this season.

The Wizards had previously agreed to send Kristaps Porzingis to the Boston Celtics in a three-team deal with the Memphis Grizzlies that saw them land point guard Tyus Jones. Sources have confirmed that Washington forward Kyle Kuzma, one of the more intriguing free agents on the market this summer, has declined his player option and will be an unrestricted free agent.

Impact on the Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors will gain a significant chunk of money from Paul’s $30 million expiring contract compared to Poole’s four years and $140 million left on his extension. Paul will provide depth and experience to the team, while Poole’s numbers slumped during the season after playing well in Golden State’s run to the 2022 NBA title.

Mike Dunleavy Jr., the new general manager of the Golden State Warriors, has made the first significant move of his tenure after officially taking over for Bob Myers last week.

The trade between the Washington Wizards and the Golden State Warriors involving Chris Paul and Jordan Poole, along with draft compensation, has been confirmed by sources. The Wizards are undergoing a complete roster overhaul under new president of basketball operations Michael Winger, while the Warriors will gain a significant chunk of money from Paul’s expiring contract. The trade will impact both teams’ depth and experience as they navigate the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.
