Alex Bowman, the NASCAR driver who just turned 30 years old, was recently injured in a sprint car race at Iowa’s 34 Raceway. He collided with Conner Morrell, causing his car to flip multiple times and sustain a compression fracture of a vertebra. Hendrick Motorsports has reported that Bowman is expected to be out of action for three to four weeks.
Bowman’s Replacement
Josh Berry, who has been a regular in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, will be stepping in for Bowman in the coming weeks. Berry had previously filled in for Chase Elliott when he missed six races earlier this year due to a fractured tibia in his left leg. While substituting for Elliott, Berry placed as high as second at Richmond Raceway.
Bowman’s Current Season
Bowman is currently winless and in ninth place in the championship standings. He had been leading the regular season points until a violation on the No. 48 car caused him to lose 60 driver and owner points. The team is requesting a medical waiver to ensure that Bowman remains eligible for the playoffs. Rick Hendrick, the owner of Hendrick Motorsports, commented on the situation, stating that they are relieved that Bowman is home and receiving world-class treatment. Hendrick also mentioned that they will be giving Bowman ample time and resources to heal and recover.
This isn’t the first time Bowman has been sidelined due to medical reasons. He missed five races at the end of the 2022 season after suffering a concussion in a crash at Texas. In a statement, Bowman assured everyone that he is feeling okay and is now focusing on healing and resting. While being out of the car is never an update that any driver wants to make, he is grateful for Josh Berry and Hendrick Motorsports for stepping up to the plate. Bowman plans to do everything he can at home to help the team and ensure his recovery is as quick as possible so that he can get back in the No. 48 car soon.
