Beatriz Haddad Maia Advances to French Open Semifinals

Brazilian tennis player Beatriz Haddad Maia pulled off another impressive comeback win at the French Open, upsetting seventh-seeded Ons Jabeur in a three-set thriller to become the first Brazilian woman to reach a Grand Slam semifinal since 1968. Haddad Maia, who is seeded 14th, started slowly and struggled to win service games early on, but saved two break points in the crucial 11th game of the second set to take control of the match. She went on to win the tiebreaker and dominated the third set, winning 6-1.

Haddad Maia had to work hard to make it to the quarterfinals, playing nearly four hours to beat Sara Sorribes Tormo in the fourth round in a match that lasted 3 hours and 51 minutes. She has shown remarkable resilience throughout the tournament, coming from behind to win her last three matches after dropping the first set in each one.

In the semifinals, Haddad Maia will face Iga Swiatek, who defeated Coco Gauff in straight sets. Swiatek is the defending champion at the French Open, having won the tournament last year without dropping a set.

Jabeur’s Grand Slam Dream Remains Unfulfilled

Ons Jabeur, who was the runner-up at both Wimbledon and the US Open last year, was hoping to become the first African woman to win a singles Grand Slam title. However, her hopes were dashed by Haddad Maia in a match that was characterized by long rallies and impressive shot-making.

Jabeur started strongly, winning the first set 6-3, but was unable to maintain her level of play in the second and third sets. She became increasingly frustrated as the match wore on, and was seen flipping her racket in the air in frustration after missing a backhand on a break-point opportunity.

Jabeur is still optimistic about her chances of winning a Grand Slam title, however. Speaking to reporters after the match, she said that she is looking forward to the grass season and is hoping to win the title at Wimbledon.

Overall, the match between Haddad Maia and Jabeur was a thrilling contest that showcased the talent and determination of both players. Haddad Maia will be looking to build on her impressive run when she takes on Swiatek in the semifinals, while Jabeur will be looking to bounce back from her defeat and continue her quest for Grand Slam glory.
