Benjamin Sesko: Forge Your Own Path

Slovenia forward Benjamin Sesko is tired of being compared to Erling Haaland. Those comparisons, though, are somewhat inevitable. Both players are 6-foot-4 strikers who took formative steps in their careers at Austrian team Salzburg before moving to German clubs, with Sesko joining Salzburg’s sister club Leipzig this summer.

Benjamin Sesko, only 20 years old, has made it clear that he is his own player. In an online call with journalists, he said, “The only thing that we have kind of similar is, of course, height. And also, we’re both fast, but in general we have a different style of playing.” Sesko understands that comparisons to one of the best players in the world are not easy and he would rather focus on being the best version of himself.

Making an Impact

Sesko has already started to make a name for himself in both the Bundesliga and international stage. He scored two goals in Leipzig’s 3-0 win at Union Berlin on September 3, ending Union’s 24-game unbeaten run at home in the league. Additionally, he sealed Leipzig’s winning start in the Champions League by scoring the decisive goal against Young Boys. With his impressive performances, Sesko is proving that he has the potential to be a top-class striker.

Inspired by Legends

As a young player, Sesko drew inspiration from towering strikers like Zlatan Ibrahimović. Sesko admired Ibrahimović’s ability to enjoy himself on the pitch and play with freedom. In an interview, Sesko said, “He was making fun, he was enjoying [himself] on the pitch. He was doing what he wanted to do. And that makes me really happy when I see that kind of player like him.” It is clear that Sesko aims to bring joy and creativity to his own game.

In recent transfer windows, Sesko reportedly had the opportunity to join several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United. However, he ultimately decided to join Leipzig. Sesko believes that the move was the right choice for his development as a player. Leipzig undoubtedly saw great potential in Sesko, as they invested €24 million ($25.5 million) in his transfer. Now, Sesko has the opportunity to prove himself in one of the top leagues in Europe.

Leipzig has been a strong contender in the Bundesliga in recent seasons, and Sesko believes that they can challenge Bayern Munich’s dominance in the league. With four wins from five Bundesliga games already this season, Leipzig has shown their potential. They have even defeated Bayern 3-0 in the German Super Cup. However, Bayern remains unbeaten in the league and will be eager to extend their run of twelve consecutive Bundesliga titles. Sesko understands the challenge ahead and emphasizes that Leipzig must give their all in every game to compete at the highest level.

Benjamin Sesko is determined to forge his own path in the world of football. While comparisons to Erling Haaland may be inevitable, Sesko embraces his individuality and aims to become the best version of himself. With his talent, passion, and inspiration from football legends, Sesko has the potential to make a significant impact both domestically and internationally. As he continues to develop at Leipzig, Sesko’s journey promises to be an exciting one to watch.
