Detroit Lions draft 2023: Gibbs and Campbell chosen in first round

Jahmyr Gibbs, an Alabama running back, was surprised when the Detroit Lions traded back six spots in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft, using their highest of two first-round picks (No. 6 overall) to select him at No. 12. Gibbs was honored to be selected and is expected to complement former Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery, who was signed as a free agent to replace the departed Jamaal Williams. Gibbs became the franchise’s highest-drafted running back since Barry Sanders was taken third overall in 1989.

Lions goal for draft

The Lions made eight total draft picks over the three days with the goal of reaching the postseason in 2023 and having their rookies contribute right away. Lions general manager Brad Holmes and the team feel good that last week’s draft represented a positive step in that direction.

Holmes’ draft strategy

Holmes entered the draft saying the Lions would “get the right football player” for the team regardless of position, as the Lions were comfortable with their business during the free agency window. The Lions added cornerbacks Cameron Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley, along with safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, to a league-worst defense. They also re-signed defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs and leading tackler Alex Anzalone, allowing them to draft players who could contribute on the field right away.

Lions’ other draft picks

The Lions added tight end Sam LaPorta and wide receiver Antoine Green to join Gibbs on offense. LaPorta holds the record for receptions (153) among all-time Iowa tight ends and Green averages 17.1 air yards per target, which is the fourth-highest in FBS. The Lions also selected Alabama safety Brian Branch to help limit big plays in 2023, as their defense allowed the most 20-plus yard plays in the NFL last season. The Lions also drafted Hendon Hooker, a quarterback of the future, who will have time to heal his knee and learn behind Jared Goff before any expectations are placed on him.

The Lions are hoping their new rookies can help them take the next step and break the NFL’s longest active playoff victory drought. After a 1-6 start last season, Detroit won eight of their final 10 games to finish 9-8, marking their first winning season since 2017. “We believe that these guys are ready to go right now,” said Holmes.
