New York Mets’ Max Scherzer Expected to Return to Pitching After Injury

New York Mets’ right-hander Max Scherzer is expected to return to the field on Sunday or Monday against the Washington Nationals. This comes after he was scratched from his start on Tuesday against the Cincinnati Reds due to neck spasms. Scherzer threw about 30 pitches before the opener of a four-game series against one of his former teams.

Scherzer’s Recent Performance

Scherzer has only pitched once since a 10-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s prohibition on sticky substances during an April 19 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The three-time Cy Young Award winner yielded six runs in 3⅓ innings against Detroit on May 3 and is currently 2-2 with a 5.56 ERA in five starts.

Scherzer’s Health

Scherzer has experienced neck spasms throughout his career and has regularly done neck exercises as a preventative measure. He also had a start pushed back last month because of back soreness. The 38-year-old has not made consecutive scheduled starts since April 4-10. Scherzer said that the neck spasms gave him more time to recover from his back injury.

Manager’s Comment

Manager Buck Showalter said that Scherzer’s bullpen session was “encouraging” and that the earliest he would pitch is Sunday. The team will assess how he feels tomorrow. Showalter also noted that Scherzer had a “pretty extensive work day, which is something he hasn’t been able to do. I could just tell by his face he’s upbeat about it.”

In conclusion, Max Scherzer’s return to pitching is highly anticipated by fans and his team. Despite his recent injury and suspension, the three-time Cy Young Award winner is hopeful that he can get back in the swing of things.
