Sutton wins dramatic BTCC race at Brands Hatch

A dramatic race at Brands Hatch saw Ashley Sutton emerge as the victor. Sutton, driving a Motorbase Performance Ford, fought his way to the front from a sixth-row start, overtaking Rory Butcher’s Speedworks Toyota and Bobby Thompson’s Team Hard Cupra Leon, before engaging in a thrilling battle with Ricky Collard’s Speedworks Motorsport Toyota. Collard had led the race since the opening lap, but his hopes of victory were dashed when he was penalized for an earlier infraction. Sutton managed to get an overlap on Collard on the final lap, but Collard fought back to regain the lead and cross the finish line 0.200 seconds ahead of Sutton. Unfortunately, Collard’s penalty converted his first-place finish into eighth.

Sutton’s strategy pays off

Sutton’s strategy of using his hybrid boost to pass other cars paid off, and he was able to lock in the fastest lap and pass his competitors, allowing him to settle down with a clear view of Collard and Thompson ahead. He used his hybrid boost to attack Collard in the closing stages, taking the lead at Paddock Hill Bend, but Collard fought back at Druids to regain the lead before crossing the finish line.

Drama behind the leaders

There was plenty of drama behind the leaders, with Jake Hill suffering a left-rear puncture and spinning out at Paddock Hill Bend, and both George Gamble and Rory Butcher suffering punctures and engine failure respectively. Tom Ingram moved up to take fourth place, third in the results, in his Excelr8 Motorsport Hyundai i30 N, while Dan Cammish’s Motorbase Ford and Colin Turkington’s WSR BMW finished in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Final results

Sutton finished in first place, followed by Thompson, Cammish, Turkington, and Morgan. Tom Chilton’s Excelr8 Hyundai finished in seventh place, followed by Collard, Josh Cook’s One Motorsport Honda Civic Type R, and Dan Lloyd’s Hard Cupra. Cammish continues to lead the points standings.
