USMNT Recruits LAFC’s Timothy Tillman After One-Time Switch

Timothy Tillman, midfielder for Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC), has filed a one-time switch with FIFA to represent the US men’s national team, according to sources. Tillman was previously part of the German national team at the Under-15 through Under-19 level. The one-time switch is a significant move for Tillman, who was born in Germany to a German mother and American father.

Impressive Start At LAFC

Tillman, a former Bayern Munich youth product, has made an impressive start to his life in Los Angeles. He has two goals in seven MLS appearances and scored in LAFC’s CONCACAF Champions League semifinal win over Philadelphia Union. Tillman’s switch is the latest success for the USMNT in recruiting dual nationals to its program.

USMNT’s Uncertainty

The USMNT is currently without a permanent coach following Gregg Berhalter’s contract expiration at the end of 2022. Anthony Hudson is currently in temporary charge, but U.S. Soccer announced the appointment of sporting director Matt Crocker to lead the search for a coach to take the men’s team into the 2026 World Cup on home soil.

Tillman’s Chance to Feature

If Tillman’s switch is approved, he could be in contention to feature for the USMNT this summer. The team will face both a semifinal and a potential final of the CONCACAF Nations League, as well as the Gold Cup tournament. Tillman’s brother, Malik Tillman, made his debut for the USMNT in June 2022. Tillman’s proposed switch is another step forward in the USMNT’s efforts to recruit dual nationals to its program.
